Organising Weekly Challenge #2 - Launch Pad

Toni @ A Bowl Full of Lemons is continuing her weekly challenges for 2011 with a guest challenge from Laurie @ Handy Man, Crafty Woman.

This week's challenge is the . . .

LAUNCH PAD

I always thought a launch pad was something other people needed - except you know everything gets dumped on the old church pew (gorgeous it is) at our back front only door and I never remember to take things with me or can find my handbag . . . so I guess I just realised that I REALLY NEED a launch pad too!

We live in a first-floor apartment so after you've hiked it up the steps with all your bags/shopping/laundry (our washing machine's downstairs) you enter through our only door and are straight into the (not huge but not tiny) hallway.

To your right is the bathroom door and wall and in the corner the place where we keep (slightly broken but still usable) umbrellas for when we need to nip outside/downstairs/next door.

To your left is our key holder (an engagement gift) which I really must make myself use EVERY single time and then an armoire which holds all our fancy glasses, dessert bowls and vases (extra pretty because you can see right through) and then doors off to the kitchen and my hubs' wee room.

In front of you is a gorgeous painting by my multi-talented wee sis and beneath it the pew I mentioned above.

On into the "long" part of the hall is simply corridor to the lounge door and guest room door and this was to soon include a console for our two re-housed lamps (that were as I began sitting on Christmas decoration boxes!).

Our pew had mismatched cushions on to make it look cosier and shoes underneath, lately I added a rather ugly but practical box to the top to contain all the things that were to leave the house, things to go to friends & family so that they were by the door for when we were going to visit said individuals. I had set up an impromptu launch pad without even thinking about it.

The process involved more than I'd expected as once I started I just couldn't stop and by the time my Husband got home, it was to an all-new hallway and after discussions, even more moving-about-of-furniture was done until - ta-da! My brand-new-without-spending-a-penny hallway and launch pad!

Now as you enter ahead of you is a three-drawer wicker unit with a re-housed lamp atop it and a painted chair beside it all nestled beneath my sister's painting. (The Husband solved the problem of wires by running the lamp cable into the guest room to plug it in - clever man!) The drawers contain things to go to other people and the bottom one holds my vast collection of gloves. The chair will be my go-to spot for my current handbag and also balances the space under the picture. A big positive is we now have the light we needed in the spot we needed it and more room in the "wide" part of the hall, really two lamps was one too many and we get to appreciate our white glass lamp in a new setting.

The shoes from under the pew were purged down to my clogs (for popping outside when the ground's wet) and the Husband's trainers (better to keep them in the airy hall than stink up the whole wardrobe). They are now underneath the armoire in the now decluttered space that I'd shoved some might-be-useful-someday cardboard boxes into before.

The "long" part of the hall now beautifully displays my Grandmother's spinning wheel (which I really must wipe down and wax some day soon) and otherwise is a clear space.

The pew has found a new home in the Husband's wee room and though it has lost its cushions I'm hoping to get some foam cut to a template to fit it so that I can upholster to match the different decor. The pew also needs a good wipe down and wax session.

Hubs also got a new rehoused lamp in one corner of his space and we moved his floor lamp to a different corner and decluttered the windowsill. So he got a "new" room too.

The two lamps from the hall moved into the lounge to replace the ones that went into the hall and wee room and this led to dusting and moving frames and vases and wires and the stereo and well a whole new lounge too!

It is a whole new house and I am delighted - it makes all things new and adds to the church-y feel of my husband's little room. It now has an old church pew to add to the church-themed pictures and framed scriptures! It is wonderful what a little furniture removal can do for the soul as well as the decor!

Thanks for the challenge ladies!

*Update*

I (finally) re-visited Day 11 of the Organising 21-day Challenge and added my two (now empty after some sorting and decluttering) milk crates to my freezer - one now contains all our FM - freezer meals) and the other all our bread - I moved our frozen vegetables in with our other bread products into a hanging basket and I am delighted with the results! An easy to navigate freezer really adds to its usefulness!
