This is romantic slush with a vintage feel and plenty of attitude. The heroine always believes herself to be in the right and is very interfering into the running of her hosts’ homes, managing of servants and the love lives of those around you. She is a fixer always looking for a project, or person to improve. She never sees her own faults (she’s extremely shallow but kind-hearted) or understands her own feelings until the conclusive ending. The prim and proper vintage English setting with historical content embellishes the story beautifully.
It is a happy ever after tale, and includes a certain amount of teen rebellion and an unsavoury situation which the heroine in her innocence cannot comprehend immediately (don’t want to say more or I’d spoil it). Definitely not for a young teen or pre-pubescent girl’s reading list but fine for an older teen/young adult – it would allow for good discussion of attitudes towards guardians and behaviour with men/boyfriends and would raise good issues with regard to chaperoning during “dates” and courtship. It would also raise extremely good discussion of the issue of finding a suitable mate who shares your values.
All in all an enjoyable historical fiction read.
